Homecoming Week

The first dress-up day was Career Day.  Here are the boys dressed up as their future professions.

The girls are all smiles in their career clothes!
Senior Citizen Day...need I say any more?!
Circus Day brought more clowns than usual to school!...along with a horse trainer and a ferocious lion.
Fantasy Day brought out a lot of personalities.

Spinning Wheel

Earlier in the year a reading group had read the book "A New Coat for Anna".  The book showed how a coat can be made from sheep's wool into yarn, which is then woven into cloth, and cut and sewn into a coat.  Marty Olsen, from Newell, has a spinning wheel and showed the kids how this process is done.    We love seeing first hand how things work.  Thanks to Marty for giving of her time and talent.

I 'Mustache" You a Question...

We were working on collecting data.  Each student decided on a question that they would like to do a survey on and collect data.  To make it fun, we took pictures of ourselves with mustaches and used the phrase "I 'mustache' you a question..."  Oh MY!  The giggles we had doing this project!  Here are a few of my favorite mustache photos.

Second Grade Rocks!

We were fortunate to have some real rock hounds come visit our school.  Jason and Erin Ballou came to second grade and taught us about the three main kinds of rocks.  We loved being able to see and touch some very unique rocks.  Thanks to the Ballous for sharing their collection with us!

Puppet Shows

Poem Video

The students all found a poem they enjoyed. They practiced reciting their poem.  Next, they were filmed reciting their poem in front of a green screen.  Lastly, we partnered up with high school students from Mrs. Carlson's class who helped us find backgrounds to go with each poem.  We hope you enjoy the video.

For the Birds

As I post this, our weather is "for the birds"!  But Katie came and did a neat presentation about real birds.  She showed us some bird books and discussed how birds have different feet and beaks to help them do different tasks.  We loved seeing her live bird.

Science Day

Kathryn came from the Science Center of DesMoines and did many fantastic demonstrations and taught us a great deal about different science phenomena.  Take a look at these pictures of some neat displays.

Legos and Math

We have been working on measurement in math.  The kids partnered up and made a lego creation with a handful of blocks they were given.  They measured their creations with both inches and centimeters.  They used the measurements to answer some addition and subtraction problems.  This is part of the Iowa Core Curriculum for Mathematics.  Here are photographs of the partners with their structures.

Poster Contest Winners

The Buena Vista Soil and Water Conservation Board sponsors a poster contest each year to promote issues with preserving  our water and land.  This year we had many winners at Newell-Fonda.  Here is a picture of the second grade poster contest winners. Congratulations!

Beach Day

Emma is all smiles!
Oh, what fun we had on Beach Day!  We did this to celebrate Read Across America Day.  The kids each made a "sandcastle" at the beach.  They used crushed up graham crackers for the sand and an angel food cupcake for the base, and then our creations started to take place!
Made in the shade!

Whoa! Look at that sand castle!

Ready to dig in!

Food makes us happy!

Just a little more.

The kids used their beach towels to read about sharks.
